BCB Short Story Contest

By Chance Books First Quarterly Short Story Contest

We’re seeking compelling short stories about happenstance—the moments when everything hinges on chance. Right place, right time. Wrong place, wrong time.

The unexpected intersection of events that could only unfold if everything aligned just so. A missed connection, a sudden turn, a coincidence, an accident, a chance encounter.

Submissions may be fiction or nonfiction, in any genre, optimistic or tragic, and may explore the full emotional range of chance from serendipity to catastrophe. What matters is the role of chance—how it shapes, disrupts, or transforms the course of a life or a sequence of events. Every entry will receive thoughtful, professional feedback from a real reader. Ten winning stories will be selected for publication in a professionally edited anthology under the By Chance Books imprint. Each winner will also receive five complimentary copies to share with family and friends.

This is a contest designed to support and elevate great work, foster connections between emerging authors and industry professionals, and build a vibrant writing community.
